Adult Basic Education (ABE), a program of Alexandria Community Education, offers day, evening and online learning classes. Classes are taught by instructors trained to teach adults, working at your pace and towards your goals. All ABE classes are taught free of charge to the learners. You must be at least 17 years old, not enrolled in K-12 school and need instruction in basic academic skills, high school equivalency, or English as a second language in order to be eligible for ABE services.

We offer flexible in person and distance learning options. 

High School Diploma Options: Adults have two options to complete their diploma: Minnesota State diploma or the GED. Contact us to see which option is best for you.

English as a Second Language (ESL) & Citizenship: Students whose native language is not English can attend English as a Second Language classes to improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Preparation for the US Citizenship Exam is also offered.


College Readiness & Accuplacer Prep: In partnership with the Alexandria Technical & Community College, let us help you refresh your math and reading skills prior to starting your college courses. Free Accuplacer preparation is also offered, and future nursing students can study for their Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) test here as well.

North Star Digital Literacy (NSDL): With a referral from the Career Force Center, you can take a free course in basic computer knowledge and skills. NSDL will help you build your digital literacy skills as you prepare for your next job.

Regional Online Career Collaborative Courses (ROCC)
Free career-oriented online courses available to ABE enrolled learners. The following courses are available for Spring 2025. Enrollment in ABE is required for these online courses. Please contact ABE at 320-762-3312  for more information and to enroll.
